Freelance Election Results Collector — One-time assignment Assignment type: One-time freelance independent contractor engagement This opportunity is for a single, project-specific assignment on election night, Nov. 3, 2026. It is not an offer of employment or an ongoing position with USA TODAY Co. Contractors will be engaged for a defined service and compensated through a flat assignment fee, subject to a separate independent contractor agreement. USA TODAY Co. is seeking independent freelance contractors for a one-time, paid election results collection assignment on Nov. 3, 2026, as part of our national election results operation. Election Results Collectors, also known as stringers, are a critical part of our effort to provide fast, accurate and verifiable election results. Each collector will gather official results from a designated election office or counting location as they are released throughout the evening. Collectors will submit results through the USA TODAY election results system and provide documentation of the official source whenever possible. This is an in-person assignment. Selected contractors will be offered a specific election office or counting location and may accept or decline the assignment. Locations are selected where results cannot be reliably obtained remotely, so reliability and a commitment to completing an accepted assignment are essential. The typical Election Night assignment lasts approximately 3–4 hours, although it may extend longer if results are delayed. The assignment requires being present when the designated election office begins releasing results and concludes when election officials have finished releasing results for the evening or USA TODAY Co. confirms that further collection is unnecessary. Prior election or journalism experience is not required. We are looking for people who are dependable, detail-oriented, comfortable with basic technology and committed to accuracy. Assignment scope • Be present at the agreed-upon election office or counting location when official results are expected to become available on Nov. 3, 2026. • Collect official election results as they are released by election officials throughout the evening. • Enter each new set of results promptly and accurately into the USA TODAY election results system. Accuracy takes priority over speed. • Collect and report results for multiple races associated with the designated location. • Photograph, save or otherwise document the official source material for results and upload photos, PDFs or other available documentation with results submissions. • When results are provided verbally, obtain the information directly from election officials and document the source according to the assignment's reporting requirements. • Perform limited basic arithmetic when necessary to combine official subtotals into the required result. Collectors are encouraged to use a calculator to verify totals rather than relying on mental math. • Communicate professionally with election officials, including asking when additional results are expected and seeking clarification when information appears incomplete or inconsistent. Collectors may identify themselves as collecting election results for USA TODAY Co. and Reuters. • Attempt to resolve questions about results with election officials when possible. If an issue cannot be resolved locally or a submission receives a Quality Control flag, contact the election results phone center for assistance and clearance. • Remain reachable during the accepted assignment to address questions about submitted results. • Complete the agreed-upon collection assignment, including monitoring official results releases until election officials have finished reporting for the evening or USA TODAY Co. confirms that further collection is unnecessary. • While collecting results on behalf of USA TODAY Co. and Reuters, contractors must maintain political neutrality and avoid partisan clothing, advocacy or other conduct that could compromise the perceived impartiality of the results collection process. • Information and documentation collected for this assignment must be submitted through authorized USA TODAY Co. channels and may not be independently published or distributed without authorization. • Complete a brief, assignment-specific remote orientation covering the results submission system, security requirements and reporting procedures. This includes system setup, creation of a password, multi-factor authentication testing and potentially a brief practice results submission. Qualifications and assignment requirements • Must be at least 18 years old. • Must be able to fulfill the accepted Election Night assignment on Nov. 3, 2026. • Must have reliable transportation to and from the designated election office or counting location. • Must have a smartphone with reliable cellular service. A laptop may also be used if preferred, but collectors should not assume Wi-Fi will be available at their designated location. • Must be comfortable with basic data entry, web-based systems and common technology such as multi-factor authentication. A brief orientation on the USA TODAY election results system will be provided. • Must be able to upload photos or PDFs and enter election results into the USA TODAY results system. • Must be highly reliable, detail-oriented and able to maintain accuracy under time pressure. • Must communicate professionally with election officials and members of the USA TODAY Co. election team. • Must be willing and able to complete the accepted assignment even if election officials experience reporting delays or continue releasing results beyond the anticipated 3–4 hours. • Must complete a brief, remote system orientation of less than one hour before Election Day. • Because each collector is responsible for a specific election location, applicants must be able to commit to the accepted assignment and promptly notify the election results team if an emergency affects their availability. • Previous experience with elections, journalism, government, data entry or similar activities is a plus but is not required. Compensation This is a one-time independent contractor assignment with a flat fee of $125 for completion of the agreed-upon election results collection services, including a brief pre-assignment system orientation. The assignment is expected to require approximately 3–4 hours on Election Night, although the duration may vary depending on when election officials release results. The flat fee includes ordinary travel, parking and other expenses associated with completing the assignment. Locations We are currently seeking freelance Election Results Collectors for one-time assignments in: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Wyoming.
