GENERAL: The employee will support the City of Rock Springs mission “To provide all individuals, through the combined efforts of city government and the people it serves, an effective, efficient and productive form of government, while promoting an enhanced quality of life, open communications and economic growth”. The employee will demonstrate the ability to manage time, maintain a safe and clean environment; practice confidentiality; treat all persons with respect and professional courtesy; accept change, accept and provide constructive feedback, receive direction, and work as a team player. The employee must also demonstrate the competencies for their position, and adhere to policies and procedures of their department and the City of Rock Springs. JOB SUMMARY: Under direction employees will perform a variety of administrative duties including, but not limited to: providing information and assistance to the general public; maintaining the gift shop; drafting promotional materials and correspondence; planning, organizing, and coordinating museum support activities; designing, interpreting, fabricating, installing and maintaining museum exhibits; and, providing the public with the best historical information and exhibits possible in a professional and friendly atmosphere. DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Exhibit Technician I - Entry Level. Positions at this level perform most of the duties required of Exhibit Technician II, but are not expected to perform at the same skill level. The employee exercises less independent discretion and judgement in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is normally supervised while in progress. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise. Employees may have limited or no directly related work experience. Exhibit Technician II – Employee performs a wide range of duties as assigned, working independently and exercising judgement and initiative. Employees receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the museum. Positions in are normally filled by advancement from the entry level, requiring three years of experience and successful performance. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Exhibit Technician I Exercises no supervision. Exhibit Technician II May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level staff. EXAMPLES OF IMPORTANT AND ESSENTIAL DUTIES Exercises general supervision of temporary or volunteer employees as assigned and performs all job tasks both independently and in conjunction with other staff as directed. Performs responsible administrative work involving the use of independent judgment, personal initiative and problem solving; performs varied and responsible duties to assist in the processing and completion of administrative operations for assigned staff. Serves as a resource and information source regarding the museum and history of Rock Springs; answers questions and provide information where judgment, knowledge and interpretations are utilized; refers patrons and callers to appropriate sources as necessary. Fabricates and installs exhibits. Organizes and maintains data and information. Conducts tours and programs and exhibits of the museum both on and off site. Keeps abreast of current developments concerning historical subject matter. Utilizes historical facts and current events to maintain presence on social media and market museum to the public. Performs historical research to guarantee accuracy and authenticity of inquiries, verbal and written, and in displays ensuring correct spelling, vocabulary, grammar and punctuation. Maintains and accounts for storage and location of artifacts; assists in the preparation of artifacts for exhibits in conjunction with other staff. Receives telephone calls, works collaboratively, and communicates clearly and effectively with patrons, staff, other City departments and officials and outside agencies. Operates office machines and equipment including word processors, computers, printers, copiers, and calculators; routinely uses a full range of spreadsheet, cataloguing and computer software applications. Collects cash, check and credit card payments over the counter and over the phone. Attends after hour’s functions and conferences as needed.
