The role of the Surgical Technician is to assist during operative and invasive procedures in the surgical center. Ensures operating suite is adequately prepared for procedure. Monitors PAR level of all surgical instruments and supplies. Assists with cleaning and sterilizing all surgical instruments. Participates in departmental staff meetings and performance improvement activities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The essential functions of the Optician include, but are not limited to the following: Prepare operating rooms for ophthalmic procedures, ensuring all instruments, supplies, medications, and equipment are available, sterile, and functioning properly. Establish and maintain a sterile field throughout surgical procedures using strict aseptic technique. Assist surgeons, registered nurses, and anesthesia providers during surgical procedures by anticipating needs and passing instruments and supplies. Prepare and maintain ophthalmic surgical equipment, including operating microscopes, phacoemulsification systems, vitrectomy equipment, and laser accessories. Perform sponge, needle, and instrument counts according to facility policy. Assist with patient positioning, surgical site preparation, and draping while ensuring patient comfort and safety. Handle intraocular lenses (IOLs), medications, specimens, and specialty supplies according to established protocols. Clean, inspect, assemble, and prepare instruments for sterilization and ensure proper care of delicate microsurgical equipment. Assist with efficient operating room turnover to maintain surgical schedules. Monitor inventory levels of ophthalmic instruments, implants, and disposable supplies, notifying leadership of replenishment needs. Accurately document surgical information as required by facility policy. Adhere to infection prevention, sterilization, OSHA, AAAHC/Joint Commission, and ASC regulatory standards. Collaborate with surgeons, nurses, anesthesia providers, and other team members to deliver exceptional patient care. Participate in quality improvement activities, continuing education, and competency training. Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
