About the role
The minimum starting pay rate for this position is $23/hr. Job Purpose: The Pump Specialist is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, rebuilding, or replacement and optimization of 50-plus pumps/systems across campus, ranging from high-horsepower industrial pumps to fractional HP ornamental fountains and circulation pumps. This role ensures pump reliability, control system integrity, and safe water quality for ornamental and guest-interactive systems while supporting efficient water movement across non-potable and treated water infrastructures. Key Responsibilities: Accountability Performs skilled trade work requiring independent judgment, technical expertise, and regulatory compliance. This role also serves as the organization’s in-house pump resource, helping reduce dependency on outside contractors, shorten response times, and improve long-term maintenance outcomes. Maintain an inventory of essential parts and supplies. People Management/Interactions Coordinate work projects with Facilities & Trades personnel, contractors, and other departments while minimizing disruption to Garden operations. Collaborate with engineers, programmers, and control vendors for system logic optimization and VFD parameter tuning. Communication Communicate regularly with the Trades Manager regarding work progress, project timelines, and challenges. Create logs and preventive maintenance records. Communicating with supervisors, users, and across departments when work impacts a larger audience, using digital, signage, verbal, and written as necessary. Respond promptly to requests or emergencies involving pump safety or maintenance issues. Engage in all campus communication methods to stay informed and share information. This includes email, MS Teams, texts, calls, and newsletters. Communicate with others clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
