About the role
Job Description Objective The HVAC Technician Apprentice assists senior HVAC technicians with the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems across the University's facilities. Working under direct supervision, the apprentice develops technical skills while supporting preventive maintenance programs and ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of campus mechanical systems. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of commercial HVAC and refrigeration equipment. Perform preventive maintenance on air handling units, split systems, chillers, package units, exhaust systems, and related mechanical equipment. Support troubleshooting of HVAC, electrical, and control system issues under the direction of senior technicians. Assist with replacing filters, belts, motors, bearings, thermostats, valves, and other HVAC components. Learn to read blueprints, wiring diagrams, equipment manuals, and technical drawings. Perform routine inspections and report equipment deficiencies or safety concerns. Assist in monitoring Building Management System (BMS) alarms and responding to service requests. Maintain accurate work orders, preventive maintenance records, and inventory documentation. Safely operate tools, testing equipment, ladders, lifts, and other maintenance equipment. Maintain clean and organized mechanical rooms, workshops, and job sites. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent required. Enrollment in or completion of a vocational or technical HVAC program preferred. Essential Knowledge Skills and Abilities Previous maintenance or mechanical experience preferred, especially SGU HVAC internship Basic knowledge of HVAC principles and mechanical systems is an asset Willingness to learn commercial HVAC systems and controls. Basic understanding of mechanical and electrical concepts. Ability to use hand and power tools safely. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and instructions. Basic computer skills for work order management. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and in confined spaces. Hours and Travel A typical work week is 40 hours, Monday to Friday with flexible start, lunch break and end day. Weekend and overtime work will be as is required. No travel anticipated for this position.
