GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Aquatics Safety Supervisor and Aquatics Manager Manager, performs lifeguard duties at multi-pool aquatic facility. Responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under their direction and control. Performs varied and responsible duties requiring a thorough knowledge of departmental operations and the exercise of judgment and initiative in completing tasks, particularly in situations not clearly defined by precedent or established procedures. Incumbent is called upon to handle a significant amount of details, each varying from the other in substance and content, requiring incumbent to approach workload with flexibility. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: External and internal applicants, as well as position incumbents who become disabled as defined under the Americans With Disabilities Act, must be able to perform the essential job functions (as listed) either unaided or with the assistance of a reasonable accommodation to be determined by management on a case by case basis. Maintains watchfulness over pools to prevent dangerous situations. Monitors and assists swimmers. Enforces all pool and facility rules; follows all safety-related procedures. Provides basic first aid. Performs rescue if appropriate, calls for help, provides emergency care, interviews witnesses, and files reports. Maintains a high level of expertise and professionalism. Attends mandatory in-service training sessions and staff meetings. Maintains proper attire; reports with provided shirt, whistle. Remains aware of all fitness and pool related classes and programs run by the Recreation Division in order to promote programs. Performs basic water testing and light maintenance in and around pools. Provides adequate notice if unable to work a scheduled shift; arranges for a substitute lifeguard and obtains approval from Management. Arrives on time and is ready to work when each assigned shift begins. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY: None EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Required certification: ARC Lifeguard Training Preferred certification: Water Safety Instructor Age 16 years or older (work permit needed if under 18) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS ABILITIES: Working knowledge of multi-pool aquatic facility, procedures and equipment. Thorough working knowledge of and ability to perform lifesaving techniques, CPR and First Aid. Ability to swim. Ability to communicate effectively with all members of the public, including children and young adults, in a courteous and tactful manner and to fairly and tactfully enforce facility rules and regulations. Regular attendance at the workplace is required. WORKING CONDITIONS PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Moderate physical effort is generally required which involves frequent lifting of between 30 and 60 pounds. Additional physical effort is required of Lifeguards in emergency situations; see attached for specific skills involved. Regularly required to stand, walk, crouch, stoop, reach, crawl, climb, talk, sit and hear for extended periods and may be required to swim for extended periods of time. Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects or equipment. May be required to work with caustic chemicals. Noise is moderate to loud at times.
