About the role
Are you ready to make a lasting impact on literacy?
At Really Great Reading, we are building a bright, diverse, and passionate team dedicated to leading the industry in improving literacy scores nationwide. With nearly two decades of leadership bringing the Science of Reading to thousands of schools, we design innovative products, training, and materials that transform how educators teach and how students learn. Here, we empower our team with the tools, support, and professional growth opportunities they need to thrive in a collaborative, forward-thinking environment—where your work truly makes a difference.
The Role | English Version (La version française suit.)
Really Great Reading is building a new platform that will launch soon! In the meantime, we have assembled a dedicated, agile team—a Tech Lead, a DevOps engineer, and two developers—to ensure the stability, security, and continued evolution of our current RGR application.
As a Senior Software Developer, you will spend the large majority of your time hands-on, building and maintaining features across our stack. You will work closely with our Tech Lead, who sets priorities and reviews work, and collaborate directly with the other developer on the team. As timing and project milestones allow, you will also collaborate with the engineering team building our next-generation platform.
This role is a perfect fit for an experienced engineer who thrives on ownership, ships dependable and highly secure production code, and excels at structured, written communication in a fully remote environment. While this is a fully remote position, we have a strong preference for candidates who reside in Quebec.
What You’ll Do
Build & Evolve the Current RGR Application
- Develop, maintain, and optimize features across our stack, utilizing Django/Python on the backend and React/TypeScript on the frontend.
- Ensure the high availability, performance, and security of the current application through the launch of the new platform.
- Participate in application support, active incident response, and prompt resolution of production issues.
- Write clean, well-tested, production-quality code, and actively document legacy systems and workflows to prevent knowledge silos.
Uphold Engineering Quality & Best Practices
- Participate actively in peer code reviews, ensuring code meets shared quality, performance, and security benchmarks.
- Autonomous Execution: Work independently on assigned features from scoping through deployment, while maintaining tight alignment with the Tech Lead on scope boundaries.
- Share technical knowledge with the team and contribute to a highly collaborative, growth-oriented, and rigorous engineering culture.
Contribute to the New Platform (As Needed)
- Partner with the new platform development team to assist with feature alignment and technical transition points.
- Participate in deployments, schema changes, and complex data migrations to ensure absolute service continuity for our educators and students.
- Contribute high-quality code, modern CI/CD pipeline improvements, and architectural best practices to the emerging ecosystem.
Our Technical Environment
- Core: Python / Django / DRF / Celery (back end), React / TypeScript / Redux (front end), PostgreSQL.
- Infrastructure: Docker, AWS (S3, Lambda), Nginx, CI/CD (Jenkins, transitioning to GitHub Actions), Sentry.
- Product specialties: video/audio streaming, interactive animations, and generative AI (OpenAI).
What You Bring
Requirements
- 5+ years of full-stack software development experience.
- Strong command of Python back-end development (Django, Django REST Framework, Celery).
- Strong command of React front-end development with TypeScript and Redux.
- Experience with PostgreSQL, REST APIs, and OAuth2 / JWT authentication.
- Comfort with Docker, AWS (S3, Lambda), and CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
- Familiarity with asynchronous and real-time architectures (Kafka, RabbitMQ, WebSockets, Redis).
- Excellent written communication and strong autonomy in a 100% remote environment.
Nice to Have
- Experience mentoring or supporting other developers.
- Experience in education or educational technology (EdTech).
- Multimedia streaming (Video.js, dash.js, Vimeo), animations (Rive, Lottie, GSAP), and generative AI (OpenAI).
- Document generation and image/video processing (WeasyPrint, Pillow, OpenCV).
- Experience with Google Cloud Platform (GCP), Terraform, or Kubernetes.
- French–English bilingualism; familiarity with FERPA, COPPA, or SOC 2.
What We Offer
- Competitive compensation, five (5) weeks of paid time off, and vacation pay in accordance with Quebec legislation.
- Basic health insurance and statutory holidays recognized in Quebec.
