About the role

About TEGNA

TEGNA Inc. helps people thrive in their local communities by providing the trusted local news and services that matter most. With 64 television stations in 51 U.S. markets, TEGNA reaches more than 100 million people monthly across the web, mobile apps, streaming, and linear television. Together, we are building a sustainable future for local news.

We're looking for a Product Owner to drive the engagement and content discovery strategy for our Connected TV and Streaming product portfolio. You'll own the roadmap for features that deepen viewer relationships - improving how audiences find, watch, and return to TEGNA content across every CTV platform.

Who You Are

You are user-obsessed. You understand how great streaming products earn loyalty - through intuitive navigation, compelling content discovery, and experiences that pull viewers deeper into what they came to watch. You're fluent in engagement metrics and know how to connect product decisions to outcomes: more visits, longer sessions, stronger retention. You bring analytical rigor and creative instinct in equal measure - you can read a retention curve, identify the drop-off, and drive a cross-functional solution. You're a natural owner - you don't wait to be told what matters, and you don't ship features without knowing what success looks like. You're organized, pragmatic, and focused on delivering real outcomes - not just features. And you're motivated by TEGNA's mission to connect and serve local communities everywhere.

Scope of Responsibility

Lead high-functioning, full-stack product teams (product, design, engineering, QA) to deliver engagement and content discovery features that drive measurable improvements in visit frequency, time spent, and retention across Connected TV platforms. Develop and maintain a robust, prioritized product backlog oriented around viewer experience quality and engagement depth. Create epics and user stories aligned with product strategy and audience targets. Partner with Content, Design, and Product Leadership to plan and execute roadmap goals through agile scrum ceremonies. Own and improve team processes to drive velocity, quality, and viewer impact. Document and communicate risks or impediments that hinder delivery or engagement outcomes.

Top Key Activities

  • Backlog Ownership: Own and prioritize the product backlog, balancing content discovery improvements, UX enhancements, platform capabilities, and delivery timelines to ensure the team always works on the highest-engagement-impact features.
  • Requirement Gathering & Refinement: Translate viewer behavior data, content team inputs, and design insights into clear, actionable user stories and acceptance criteria. Maintain a healthy backlog with minimal carryover.
  • Sprint Planning & Delivery: Work closely with designers, engineers, and QA during sprint cycles to ensure smooth delivery, clarity of scope, and fast decision-making on engagement and discovery features.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Serve as the primary product interface for Content and Design -translating their goals into buildable product requirements and keeping them informed of progress, tradeoffs, and delivery timelines. Work closely with newsrooms and content teams to surface live programming, breaking news, and local community content in ways that drive meaningful viewer engagement.
  • Engagement & Performance Analysis: Own the measurement framework for engagement features - tracking visit frequency, session depth, time spent, and retention rates. Use data to prioritize and iterate.
  • Strategy & Roadmap Definition: Contribute to product strategy and roadmapping in collaboration with Product Leadership, with a specific focus on content discovery, navigation, personalization, live streaming, and viewer retention.
  • Experimentation: Design and interpret A/B tests on navigation patterns, content surfaces, and discovery features. Use LaunchDarkly and Amplitude to run experiments independently of app store release cycles.
  • Continuous Improvement: Analyze viewer behavior, content performance, and session data to identify and prioritize UX improvements with measurable engagement impact.
  • Communications: Lead stakeholder communications with Content, Design, and Product Leadership — covering launch readiness, tradeoff decisions, dependencies, and performance results.

Domain Acumen

  • Deep understanding of CTV and streaming viewer behavior - how audiences discover, browse, and consume video content - and the ability to translate those patterns into product requirements.
  • Experience building or improving content discovery, navigation, and recommendations experiences in streaming or Connected TV environments, with a clear understanding of how product decisions affect session depth and retention.
  • Practical understanding of engagement mechanics: content carousels, personalization signals, continue-watching experiences, search and browse patterns, and the UX levers that drive return visits.
  • Experience working with live streaming and real-time content surfaces - breaking news, live events, and time-sensitive programming - and the product considerations unique to live versus on-demand viewing.
  • Comfort working directly with newsrooms and editorial content teams to understand programming priorities and translate them into product features that surface the right content to the right viewer at the right moment.
  • Experience with A/B testing and experimentation platforms (e.g. LaunchDarkly) in a product context, including experiment design and result interpretation.
  • Demonstrated proficiency turning data into actionable insights, leveraging KPIs such as visit frequency, DAU/WAU, average session duration, content starts, completion rates, and month-over-month retention.
  • Knowledge of industry trends in streaming UX - personalization, vertical video, content collections, and authenticated experiences - with the ability to evaluate and recommend emerging approaches.
  • Experience with analytics platforms (e.g. Amplitude, or similar) to track viewer behavior and engagement performance across platforms.

Key Professional Traits and Requirements

  • 3–5 years of product management experience, with demonstrated ownership of user-experience-driven roadmaps
  • Thrives in fast-paced environments with multiple concurrent workstreams
  • Works collaboratively across product, content, and design functions
  • Strong communicator (written & verbal) - able to speak credibly with both content stakeholders and Engineering
  • User-obsessed with a bias for measurable engagement outcomes over feature output
  • Supports and facilitates healthy team dynamics
  • Strong planning and organizational ski
