Summary The Locomotive Operator/Switcher maneuvers locomotives to assemble and disassemble trains, operates track switches, and ensures secure coupling and uncoupling of railcars. They conduct equipment inspections, maintain safety compliance, and coordinate with other yard personnel to ensure smooth and efficient yard operations. Responsibilities • Maneuvering locomotives within the switching yard to assemble and disassemble trains ◦ Moving railcars to designated tracks as per schedule and instructions ◦ Operating track switches to route trains or individual railcars onto different tracks ◦ Ensuring that tracks are correctly aligned for the intended movement ◦ Connecting and disconnecting railcars using mechanical couplings ◦ Inspecting couplings and ensuring secure connections ◦ Conducting pre-operational inspections of locomotives and railcars to identify any mechanical issues ◦ Reporting and addressing any defects or maintenance needs ◦ Using radios and hand signals to convey information accurately and efficiently ◦ Adhering to all safety protocols and regulations to prevent accidents and injuries ◦ Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) ◦ Quickly addressing and resolving operational issues that arise during shifts ◦ Making informed decisions to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the yard • Documenting all movements, switch positions, and any incidents that occur during operations ◦ Keeping logs of inspections and maintenance activities ◦ Ensuring compliance with environmental and safety regulations • Participating in ongoing training programs to stay updated on operational procedures and safety standards ◦ Assisting in the training of new personnel as needed ◦ Other duties as assigned Skills • Detail oriented Required • Safety-conscious Required • Ability to work outside under various conditions Required • Discipline to follow processes and procedures in a consistent and safe manner Required • Experience operating diesel locomotives in a switching yard Required Education & Experience • High School Diploma/G.E.D. Working and Environmental Conditions This position works in a plant manufacturing/warehouse setting. • Comfortable working at heights, specifically at railcars and locomotive heights • Operate locomotive operation • Ability to exercise throttle control • Comfortable working in all weather conditions • Comfortable working in/around locomotive • The position is based out of Savannah, GA office at a plant manufacturing/warehousing environment. • Communication with employees and field partners will be primarily conducted via phone and email.
