About the role

ABOUT THE ROLE Join the core infrastructure team of a fast-growing energy technology company building the operating system for the next generation of European energy. The platform combines a modular billing engine, low-level energy-market communication protocols, and a full accounting ledger — delivered as a headless, API-first layer that enables hardware companies and energy providers to launch dynamic electricity plans rapidly. As a Backend Engineer, you will work across highly complex, distributed systems that power real-time electricity pricing, billing, and market integrations. This is a high-ownership role for engineers who love designing for scale and operating with autonomy in a fast-moving environment. WHAT YOU'LL DO - Solve for complexity through design — Architect clean, maintainable solutions to inherently hard infrastructure problems in energy billing and market communication. - Scale the core — Contribute to scalable, reliable backend services that handle dynamic pricing, billing flows, and ledger operations at volume. - Bias for action — Move quickly and decisively; ship meaningful work and iterate with purpose. - Raise the bar — Uphold and improve engineering standards through code review, documentation, and thoughtful system design. WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR Required: - Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience - 3–10+ years of backend engineering experience - Proficiency in TypeScript (Node.js) with a strong grasp of asynchronous programming - Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and an ORM (experience with Drizzle is a plus) - Experience with Next.js, including API routes or server components used for backend services - Familiarity with distributed systems concepts and designing scalable, maintainable core services - Experience integrating Stripe payments and related billing flows - Strong written and verbal communication skills in English - Ownership mindset and ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment - Willingness to work on-site in Berlin, Germany Nice to Have: - Familiarity with workflow orchestration tools (e.g., Temporal) - Experience with lightweight HTTP frameworks (e.g., Hono) - Background in energy, utilities, fintech, or similarly regulated/complex domains TECH STACK - Languages & Frameworks: TypeScript, Node.js, Next.js, Hono - Database: PostgreSQL, Drizzle ORM - Payments: Stripe - Orchestration: Temporal - Frontend (context): Tailwind CSS COMPENSATION & BENEFITS - Salary: €80,000 – €120,000 per year, depending on experience - Visa sponsorship is available for qualified candidates - Early-stage equity opportunity at a well-backed pre-seed company LOCATION This is a full-time, on-site role based in Berlin, Germany. The team works together in-person and values close collaboration. Relocation support and visa sponsorship are available.
