About the role
The Medical Assistant is responsible for assisting the Providers in support of the medical care of patients. Day-to-day activities will vary from triage, taking medical histories, and performing point-of-care and phlebotomy testing to other clerical and clinical duties. Job Duties and Responsibilities: • Performs general and medical assisting duties according to state guidelines. • Records and signs all pertinent information in the patient's chart • Triage all patients according to Patient Plus standards. • Instruct patients in the collection of samples and tests. • Collects, accurately labels, and forwards specimens for laboratory analysis. • Prepares patients and assists Providers with examination, treatments, and procedures. • Prepares and administers medications and injections after verifying correct dosage (Use the six rights of medication). • Observes, records, and reports the patient's condition and reaction to drugs and treatments to Providers. • Prepares examination rooms; sterilizes instruments for tests per established procedures. • Thoroughly cleans equipment and examination rooms per policy. • Demonstrates thorough knowledge of infection control procedures; strictly adheres to policies and procedures; washes hands before and after each patient contact. • Instructs and arranges for patient testing and admissions. • Responds to and refers appropriate incoming telephone calls to Providers. • Instruct the patient regarding medication and treatment instructions before discharge. • Posts tests and examination results to charts. • Explains and distributes patient education material (if applicable). • Answers patients' questions. • Escorts patients to the appropriate area in the clinic when necessary. Patient Records and Recall: • Notify and record patients of test results, as directed by Provider. • Notifies patient of the next follow-up visit required. Occupational Health: • Perform drug screen collections based on DOT guidelines. • Accurately perform other services, including, but not limited to, DOT and non-DOT physicals in compliance with current guidelines and Breath Alcohol Testing. • Follow documentation procedures and complete required documentation related to each patient visit. • Accurately use the EMR system for Occupational Medicine/Workers' Compensation patients. • Execute follow-up calls promptly. • Maintain continual compliance with all regulating agencies. • Assist with on-site testing as needed. Other: • Stocks exam rooms, rotates merchandise, stocks new supplies in exam rooms, assists the front desk when not involved with patient care or back-office maintenance, and maintains an adequate inventory of drugs and medical supplies. • Notifies Clinic Manager/Supervisor if supplies need to be ordered. • Ensure all equipment is calibrated per appropriate regulations. • Participates in continuing education and other appropriate experiences to maintain and enhance professional competence. • Maintains patient confidentiality 100% of the time; demonstrates complete discretion when discussing patient information. • Maintains established office policies and procedures and follows OSHA and CLIA guidelines (CLIA: Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments. • Maintains an organized and clean work area. • Must be flexible and committed to being a team player. • Perform other duties as assigned.
